DOS Project

These steps are a simplified cookbook type recipe for using the Borland C++ Integrated Design Environment (IDE) to develop a simple program to be run from DOS.
These screen shots were taken from Borland C++ Version 4.52 running under Windows NT 4. The appearance of windows used by Borland C++ Version 4.0 is slightly different, but the procedure is the same. The appearance of the windows may also vary somewhat with the operating system version and setup.

Run Borland C++ (bcw).
Select Project/New project from the menu.
A "New Target" window will appear.
1. Type a new "Project Path and Name" in the first edit box. The extension ".ide" will be added automatically.
2. The "Target Name" will appear automatically.
3. Leave Target Type as "Application (.exe.)"
4. Select Platform as "DOS (Standard)."
5. Leave Target Model as "Large."
6. Select "Floating Point" (assuming a 486 or higher processor.)
7. Select "Frameworks" and "Libraries" as required.
8. Click "OK."
The "New Target" window will close, and a "Project" window will open. Initially, it will list an executable file and a source file with the same name as the project, and in the same directory.
Double click on the source file in the "Project" window to open an edit window for the source code.
Enter the program code.
There are three alternative ways to compile and link the program (creating an executable .exe file):
- Clicking the "Make project" button on the tool bar:
- Selecting Project/Make all from the menu:
- Pressing the "F9" key.
Run the program from a DOS window (from the Windows "Start" menu).
- Use the "CD" command to change to the project directory.
  C:\winnt4\system32>CD \dev
- Enter the name of the program, with no extension:
  C:\dev>fsassn2
